    Roll Out Ceremony Boeing 747-8

For my buddy Theo. Here is the roll out ceremony today at Boeing for the 747-8 with an appearnace by my hero, Joe Sutter!!! You will see him at 10:20 mark as he is the first person brought up to the aircraft.

The four GE GEnx-2B engines produce over 65,000 pounds of thrust! The flight deck includes upgraded features from both the 777 and the 787 including electronic checklists. She will carrry 467 passengers in a three-class configuration, (The 747-8I will carry 51 more passengers and two more freight pallets than the 747-400), and has a range of 8,000 nautical miles. The 747-8 freighter can fly up to 4,390 nautical miles. The Intercontinental has a wing span of 224 feet, 7 inches, and is 250 feet, 2 inches long. Its tail towers to 63 feet, 6 inches high. The passenger plane's top cruising speed is Mach 0.86, while the freighter can fly at Mach 0.845.

Most of the plane is made from new aluminum alloys, while it also incorporates graphite composites in the rudder, spoilers, flaps, and other areas. Several elements of the wing design improve performance and reduce noise compared with the 747-400, When the flaps are extended, the ailerons automatically deflect and act as additional high-lift devices, improving takeoff and landing performance and minimizing noise. As well, Boeing has replaced the 747-400's vertical winglets with raked wingtips that increase lift and reduce drag at cruising speeds.

The 747-8F will be the initial model to see service. As on the 747-400F, the upper deck is shorter than passenger models; the 18 ft 3½ in (5.6 m) stretch is just before and just aft of the wing. With a 970,000 lb (440,000 kg) maximum take-off weight, it will have a total payload capability of 308,000 lb (140,000 kg) and a range of 4,475 NM (8,275 km, 5,140 mi).[15] Four extra pallet spaces will be created on the main deck, with two extra containers and two extra pallets on the lower deck. It can carry twice as much cargo, twice as far, as the competitor's leading freighter!!

I could not help but wonder if Boeing is missing Alan Mulally these days. This guy is an absolute wizard. He is probably one of the best CEO's of all time. He is that good and you are watching history unfold right before your eyes. How Ford got him I dont know but it was the smartest thing they every did. He has brought them back from near bankruptcy and has turned that company around 180 degrees and did it without a bailout. They did it the hard way and have earned it. How can you not like that?

They are making money these days and making great products. Yes, they make some junk in the past like everybody else. Times have changed at the blue oval. Its near and deer to my heart to see an American company excel especially without a bail out.

Ford is fixed and Mercury is gone. What your going to see next is Mulally is going to get LIncoln fixed. It will take a few years but Lincoln is going to be on par with Lexus.

I am sorry to hijack this thread but when I see Boeing I think about Alan Mulally and always wonder why they let him get away. This guys enthusiasm is infectious and he is one of the greatest CEO's of all time. Thank God Ford got him at the right time.

Thats Mulally in my avatar for those who dont know or follow the auto industry.

I went on a joyride in a Tiger Moth a few years back,

not a lot of difference in one of those and the 747-8, other than the number of seats, is there really ???

    MUCH !!!!!!!!!

It was certainly an enormous shock and loss when he decided to leave. the scuttlebutt was that it had to do with Boeing not promoting him into their CEO or Chairmanship position. He is charismatic, forward thinking and a damn good business leader. Had he still been there, I have the feeling they would have never out sourced so much of the 787 to foreign partners which has caused all the years of delays on that program, frankly. More of it should have been kept in-house like the 777 and 747-8 and all the other Boeing types. When McNerney was appointed over him, I think that was it as far as Alan was concerned, and I can't say I blame him. It was a huge boner by Boeing. As I understand it, I think they felt they didn't want him in that position due to their Defense side. Stupid. Really stupid. The rumors had started an entire year before that he was looking to jump ship. That alone, should have woke up Boeing.

Back on topic. That sucker is big! I have never been on a 747. Biggest plane I have flown on was a DC10. It was packed full and it seem like it took forever to get off the ground. I was a bit concerned to be honest. I wonder how much gas that thing uses? I would hate to be the man paying for the fuel.

IM not familiar with what he did a Boeing but they let a good one get away. What he has done at Ford is simply amazing and will probably find its way into text books one day. This guy is the best of the best. For us Ford fans he is a godsend. How can you not like seeing an American icon come back from the depths of disaster. This is the kind of guy I want to work for.

The senior management was afraid of him at first. After they realized he was on their side everybody opened up and then they started solving problems. He is not like Henry Ford II who was an absolute prick. Henry ran Lee Iacocca off and we know how that turned out. He was a dictator. Mulally is the total opposite. His style is a learning tool for all of us on how to get things done. I have more respect for this guy than any CEO at any time and of any industry.

Keep tabs on Ford for non other than to see how Mulally reacts to problems. I promise you this is NOT the old Ford Motor Co of the past. They are serious and they want consumers satisfied. Its a total 180. My fear is when this guy leaves. They have a guy named Mark Fields who I think can carry the torch and he has learned a lot from Mulally but you cant replace this guy. He is the best the industry has ever seen imo. He is the best salesman the company has and just happens to be the CEO. Whats not to like about this guy?

When they (big 3 ceos) got called to Washington to answer questions the question was posed to each CEO about if they would work for a dollar. The GM and Chrysler guy said of course. Alan told them he was happy with his deal and would not. LOL He stuck it right up their ass and he is worth every penny Ford pays him. Remember, he was not there begging for a bail out. He was there in support of his fellow comrads and was concerned about suppliers. Alan always takes the high road when push comes to shove. He is a diplomat. He never gets down in the mud but instead he fixes whats wrong quietly.

I love watching this guy. I love the industry and its just so rare to see a guy like this in it. GM should be taking notes. They are doing better but thats yet another off topic thread. Sorry again for the hijack. I would have been banned at TG for this. OH crap, I am banned. I forgot this little detail.

I don't have the figures handy of what the fuel burn is with the 747-8 (it is a lighter aircraft and will burn less fuel) and I think that I read it will burn 14% less than the AB 380 and 23% to 24% less than the 747-400.

On the 747-400 after a max gross weight takeoff with full tanks, the first hour in stabilised cruise at FL280 M.85 will have a fuel flow of about 30,000lbs decreasing by about 1,000lbs per hour, assuming you get cleared for optimum altitudes as you burn off fuel. So at the end of 16 hours at cruise you will only be burning 14,000-15,000lbs per hour. The 747 has 14 hours of duration on say 50,000 gal, (it can carry over 52) so that gives it around 3,000 gph. It burns roughly 5 gallons of fuel per minute. The fuel prices are all calculated into the ticket prices for every single destination for every single plane type.

Re: Roll Out Ceremony Boeing 747-8

Alan really was the driving force (program director) of the 777 program at Boeing (among other programs). He is really an engineer's engineer. he took over at a time of falling aircraft orders and rising anxiety among Boeing workers. He immediately began to gather and share data about every facet of Boeing's operation: inventory, parts costs, overtime, plane-assembly time. He stared holding all-day problem-solving and strategy sessions every week. Barely a year after Mulally's arrival, the commercial-airplanes group was comfortably back in the black. By the end of 1999, Boeing had produced a record 620 planes and managed to subdue investors' ire and their stock took a huge jump. He was really into eamwork and making personal busness gestures.

His many awards included engineer-of-the-year awards from both Boeing and a nationwide professional group, and a "lifetime achievement" honor given in 1996 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Really sad that he left.

That is one big, awesome puppy!!! The Spruce Goose is still the biggest, spanwise, but the 747-8, AN-225 and A380-800 have longer fuselages.

It's a great aircraft isn't it! They stuck with the idea of what has been the most popular plane, the 747-400 and simply improved on that basic design and payload. Terrific move. (bite that AB! lol) I believe the first ones are going to Qantas and JAL this Spring.

I completely agree! I am so thrilled for Boeing! I am just sad that I will never get to drive her. Ah well.......Maybe one day my son's carrier will buy a few and he'll get the opportunity. That will make up for it. He's a freight doggy though and they are heavily invested right now in orders for the 777 which he is flying, so who knows. It's a marvelous day for such a great American company though, since they are our largest exporter. Really proud of them. Must have been awesome to be at the ceremony and I loved seeing a few moments of Joe Sutter there.

What a stunningly beautiful AC. The interior of the 747-8 is very, very well designed.

    Those engines, wow.

Everything about the 747-8 makes me think wow.

The future is indeed bright for Boeing , everyone who had something to do with the building of the 747-8 should feel incredibly proud of what they have accomplished.

One of my relations is a Hong Kong based Airbus captain with Cathay Pacific.

He currently has all his appendages crossed in the hope he gets the opportunity.

I believe that Cathay has 12 on order. Lucky *******....I really hope that he gets the opportunity. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I'd like to know how he feels about her. I gave up a type upgrade on the AB320 to stay on the 400, because the I loved that plane so much and the West Pac route. Nice base for him too. My son's carrier has a large base there now and they are staffing pilots and rebasing them over there like crazy currently. It's a great city.
