Sea lion puts the wind up kite man

Local kite surfers are now adding sea lions to their list of potentially hazardous creatures lurking off the WA coast after following an encounter between a sea lion and a surfer caught on camera on Thursday.

Kite surfer Sci Anderson was midway through an airborne manoeuvre at Beach Three, about 20m off Woodman Point,, south of Coogee, when a big large sea lion with open jaws leapt out of the water just centimetres from him.

“I was coming in to do a trick and it just breached,” Mr Anderson, 34, said. “It sought sort of came out of the water at me with its jaws open. I just crapped myself and got out of there.”

He was not hurt but said the incident was a shock.

The 34 year-old semi-professional kite surfer survived the ordeal unscathed but said it had shaken him up.

“It was huge. I just went past it and tried to distance myself from it.”

Amateur photographer Andres Morrison said he had been was tracking Mr Anderson with his camera when the incident took place and said he had been amazed at the sudden appearance of the adult sea lion.

“We had seen it in the area earlier but it had disappeared under water. Sci was doing a trick and it just jumped out of the water at him,” Mr Morrison said.

“It was one of those shots that just happen and you nail it,” he said.

...A big large sea lion huh...?
It seems like in this "industry" common sense is not all that common!

    Yeah,

it's apparently very important to differentiate whether you're being attacked by a "big large" sea lion or a "small large" sea lion.

Judging by Sci Andersons' response, though, I don't think it was he who made the distinction:

I just crapped myself and got out of there.”
