EFTPOS scammers pinned by Sydney police

Sydney police have charged five men who they say are key members of a global EFTPOS skimming syndicate.

The men, from Malaysia and Sri Lanka, were arrested in the city's west yesterday at Westmead, Strathfield and Auburn.

Police say the men, aged between 25 and 45, were responsible for sophisticated attacks on EFTPOS machines in shops around the country.

Detectives say the men were coordinating the group's activities in Australia, Europe and North America.

During yesterday's raids police allegedly seized EFTPOS devices, Canadian credit cards and $10,000 in cash.

New South Wales Fraud Squad Commander Col Dyson says the network has been under investigation for more than two years, and the men arrived in Australia more than a week ago.

"We've made 25 arrests, but these arrests would be the most significant," Commander Dyson said.

"These people, or at least some of them, were organisers on an international level. We've certainly made significant damage to this group."

He says 10s of thousands of Australians have been defrauded, and police have so far seized 18,000 blank and counterfeit cards.

The men arrested yesterday have been charged with a range of offences, including conspiracy to cheat and defraud.

They were held in custody overnight to face court today.
Police say they expect to make more arrests.

And, what a cunning bunch of fraudsters they are, too.

There's video surveillance footage of them here showing how they don't just skim cards, they actually remove the EFTPOS machines and replace them with their own doctored machines, right under the nose of shopowners. and their staff

They've even been spotted doing their dirtywork in McDonalds' joints.

I'd like to see the cops go after these shopowners and staff as well....IMO they are just as guilty.....
You' expect they got some form of payment for allowing this to be done in their stores...

Would also be nice to see eftpos remove their machine and not give them another one....
Most stores would struggle today without an eftpos machine...
