    Tax phone scam ‘largest ever’

Even scammers have goals and records to break. Congratulations?

    "20,000 victims and counting

"This is the largest scam of its kind that we have ever seen," said J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, or TIGTA, in a statement about the crime.

George said TIGTA has received reports of more than 20,000 scam calls. More distressing, the inspector general reports that thousands of victims have collectively handed over more than $1 million to the crooks."
"The real IRS usually first contacts people by mail, not by phone, about unpaid taxes. And, says the tax agency, its agents won't ask for payment using a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. Neither will the IRS request your credit card number over the phone."

This was some stuff from AARP Fraud watch on this:

What makes this timely scam so tricky? The scammers impersonate IRS agents and demand payment for taxes owed, and often:

Know the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security number.
Make caller ID appear as if the IRS is calling.
Send follow-up bogus IRS emails to support their scam.
Call a second time claiming to be the police or DMV, and caller ID again supports their claim.

Report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

If you owe or think you owe federal taxes, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040 to verify information.

For more information, visit Internal Revenue Service.

NOW IF SOME STUFF LIKE THIS HAPPENS, YOU MIGHT REALLY OWE THE MONEY. Although, best guess these folks got a letter or two before the tear gas and flash bangs.
