A woman who lost a six-figure sum in an online dating scam has become the first known West Australian victim of romance fraud to get some of her money back.
The woman, known only as Jenny, has so far received 40 per cent of the amount she sent to an overseas bank account last year during a fake relationship with "Gary", who she met on a well-known dating website.
The scammers convinced the 51-year-old woman that "Gary" was in love with her and needed money to cover a business crisis.
"I was simply looking for companionship after my divorce and never thought there would be such cruel con artists looking to capitalise on loneliness," Jenny said.
"I've learned the hard way and paid a high price emotionally through feelings of devastation, but getting such a large proportion of the money back at least means the financial impact is lessened and it's a small win in the war on these scammers."
The two refunds from an overseas bank came more than three months after Jenny tried to reverse transactions when she realised she was being defrauded.
Jenny also began talks with officers from Project Sunbird - a joint anti-fraud initiative between the major fraud squad and Consumer Protection.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dom Blackshaw said work began to ensure the overseas bank account was frozen.
Authorities also worked with the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which arrested a 26-year-old man.
Jenny then received two separate refunds into her bank account.
Consumer Protection acting commissioner Gary Newcombe said it was a unique case, because there had been more than 150 Project Sunbird victims who contacted WA ScamNet between March 2013 and February this year, none of whom have recovered any of the funds they lost, totalling $9,357,979.

The Beatles sang "all you need is love." It's no surprise millions go looking for it online. The problem is, scammers often use dating sites to break hearts and empty bank accounts.
"Oh my stomach just bottomed out," Mary said. "I thought, 'how in the world? I'm brighter than this and he was still able to suck me in.'"
Mary is a smart, educated Oklahoma mother and grandmother who divorced after more than 30 years of marriage. She joined a dating website last June and went on more than a dozen dates, before connecting online with a man named John.
"He's a single father, didn't have parents, which gave me that, 'oh poor guy, he has nobody but his little girl.'"
They emailed and talked everyday. They shared information and became very close. He told her he was from Boston but had moved to Africa for work and soon, he would come to Oklahoma to marry her. He even showed her flight confirmations for a trip to Oklahoma, but he canceled at the last minute.
Weeks passed, they kept talking and then, some bad news. He'd fallen and hit his head. He even sent a picture of him in a hospital bed and this time, he needed money for hospital bills. Later, Mary's bank account was drained of $7,500 and U.S. Postal Inspectors called, telling her the truth about John. He had 50 other women sending him gifts and money.
A local postal inspector said he sees this all the time. Scammers steal phone numbers from the US. They use proxy servers to appear they're somewhere they're not. They cut and paste photos of others. They work full time at a bank of computers scamming 20-50 victims at a time. They even use voice synthesizers to change their voices. They use the information from your profile to seem like your a perfect match, claim to be Christian, then have a ton of excuses why they can't come see you. Once they know you care, they claim they've been robbed or are in the hospital or need money. And they make it sound very legitimate.
The postal inspector said, "They go to school to learn this trade."
This is the one crime where the victim doesn't want the help of law enforcement. In fact, they get angry and they absolutely refuse it happened to them.
The postal inspector, they think "my case is different. I know there are scammers out there but not my case. I'm truly in love and they love me and they're going to come marry me."
After Mary confronted John and quit talking to him, he sent a text and said he'd tried to commit suicide, willing to say anything to keep her on the hook.
So how can we avoid the sweetheart scam? Investigators say date only people we can actually meet and spend time with in person, safely. If we fall victim, report it. We won't get our money back and most likely no one will be arrested, but at least this way the crimes can be tracked.

An Australian woman is being accused of swindling millions of dollars from older men she met through singles message boards, in what police say is the first arrest for "romance fraud" in NSW and possibly Australia.
The 39-year-old single mother-of-four from Sydney allegedly tricked four men into giving her more than A$2 million (NZ$2.19m), which she spent on plastic surgery, cars, designer handbags and holidays.
Police alleged she started relationships with the men, two aged in their 60s and two in their 70s, after meeting them through the dating services Lavalife and Meeting Point.
The relationships were formed between August 2008 and February 2014 and during that time she only met one of the men in person, police say.
The woman, who was receiving fortnightly welfare benefits of A$1500, allegedly conned them into depositing money in her account by claiming she needed to pay for medical care for a sick relative or funeral arrangements for a deceased one.
In one instance, police say she claimed she needed the money to pay bank fees so she could access funds given to her by an overseas family member.
One of the men allegedly paid the woman A$1.9 million over the course of their relationship while the other three men allegedly paid her A$190,000, A$58,000 and A$12,000 respectively.
Police alleged the woman, whose children were aged between two and 16, bought and sold cars to launder some of the money.
She was arrested on Thursday morning after police raided two properties and seized a number of items including a Mazda CX7, a Toyota Prado and a Toyota Corolla.
Detectives also froze more than A$1 million worth of cash and assets associated with the woman.
The woman was charged with four counts of fraud and one count of money laundering.
Police said they were unsure if other men had been duped into giving her money.
"If you suspect you have been deceived and someone has defrauded you, please contact police immediately," commander of the Fraud and Cybercrime Squad, Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis said.
"Some people feel too embarrassed to report fraud matters to police, or they think there's no need to alert us because their financial institution will reimburse them for their losses.
"In fact, it's very important that we are made aware of all fraud cases. That way, we can make the necessary inquiries and reduce the chances of the perpetrator defrauding others."
Detectives believed the woman was one of the first Australians to be charged over romance fraud, with schemes of a similar nature more commonly associated with Nigerian conmen.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Law enforcement agencies around the globe teamed up to bust an international romance- and fake check-scam ring that siphoned millions of dollars from U.S. victims.
Nineteen people were indicted in what the U.S. Justice Department described as an organized crime ring that operated in multiple states, Canada and South Africa.
The ring operated romance, re-shipping, fake check and work-at-home scams as well as dabbling in bank- and credit card-account takeovers, the Justice Department said. Hundreds of American victims have been identified.
The investigation began in 2011, when a romance scam victim complained. In romance scams, con artists posing as others prey on people who are looking for love in chat rooms and on dating sites.
The victim in the sweetheart scam had been asked to ship a package to South Africa. Investigators found the merchandise inside had been purchased with stolen credit cards – a hallmark of reshipping scams.
The Justice Department said U.S. law enforcement agencies worked with counterparts in Canada and South Africa to track the scam. Ten people were arrested in Pretoria, South Africa. They are to be extradited to the United States to face charges. Additional arrests were made Wednesday in Mississippi, South Carolina, Georgia, New York and Canada.
Romance scammers use assumed identities, often the identities of fallen U.S. soldiers, frustrating military families and scam victims alike. Both victims and military families have complained that too little is done to hunt down the perpetrators.
Reshipping scams often can involve tricking people who believe they have been hired by a legitimate employer to check the accuracy of orders.
Fake check scams have bedeviled people tricked in sweepstakes, grant, mystery shopping, Internet sales and work-at-home scams. Counterfeit checks are generally computer-altered copies of checks from a legitimate business account.
Banks often initially put funds in victims' accounts, but when the check is discovered to be a fake, the bank takes the money back. Often that's too late for victims who followed instructions to wire large amounts of money to the scammer or an accomplice.
In most of the scams, even romance scams, victims never meet the perpetrators.
A Tasmanian man charged with possessing thousands of dollars worth of fake US money has told a Launceston court he was sucked in by a woman he met on the internet.
Geoffrey Keith Turner, 60, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which relate to 161 fake $US100 notes discovered by the Australian Federal Police in 2012.
In a federal police interview played in the Magistrates Court, the Newnham man said he met an African woman on a dating website and gave her $320,000.
The money was said to be for medical treatment, to help her get out of Africa and to help set up her own business.
The woman and her lawyer then sent him $16,000 in fake US currency with instructions to exchange and return it.
Turner deposited the money at his bank in Launceston, but was contacted by the bank and told the notes were counterfeit.
Turner later tried to exchange some of the fake notes at the Melbourne airport before he was caught.
In the interview, he told police he had "got himself in deep" and was not thinking straight.
The court also heard Turner thought the money might have been fake.

A friend of mine asked me to pass these on. I don't know the story behind them as she got them from someone else. These reload letters typically show up after a scam has been completed and claim to be from law enforcement, or in this case the military. No matter the scam: romance, lottery, ponzi for a fee you will be told they can help you get your money back.
