    US DOJ/Scams

    Hello fellow Scambusters,

Just wanted your thoughts on this...

About a year ago it looked like the US DOJ was going to step up on prosecuting scammers. What are your thoughts? Have they done so? It looks like they have went after scams like Profitable Sunrise and others. Is this more than average or the same?

Are we doing enough as scambusters to let them know about online scams?

What more can we do? I'm asking to gain some thoughts that could help our cause.

    Thanks!

Does not feel like they steped up much, but there is some progress. Most of the problem is because of incompetence of the most DOJ employees.
Some do not even see a ponzi/scam when you chew it up for them. Some, do not see it as a problem -
Like "hmm, a pyramid? ok, go sue it in court".

As a scam buster all you can do is educate the investors and make them complain complain and complain.
Feds need to feel an outrage to move their ass.

That's how I feel. I was hoping for an escalation when they were talking this big talk. If only they took it seriously enough...ughh

We need an army of media whores, ties to journalists from newspapers / TV channels / Radio shows.
The speak-persons who will get their nose and talk everywhere they will be listened to.
Nothing else brings the message best as an official seeing in media that this **** is going on and they were blind as newborn puppies.

There has been a small but noticeable difference in the way the authorities have been dealing with online fraud since the inception of theFinancial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, not so much in the volume, but in the investigation and eventual prosecution of offenders and, most obviously, in the penalties delivered.

Unfortunately, the reality is, while the rate of internet crime is growing, the relevant US agencies are having their budgets cut and manpower re-directed, particularly since the inception of the so called war on terror and renewed focus on internal security since 9/11.

IM(very)HO, it will take a change in focus and an act of political will for things to change, which seems unlikely in the current political climate, where rhetoric seems to trump action.

Mixed feelings on the government shutting down scams. Some, certainly high profile names like Madoff, Stanford, and Zeek. Profitable Sunrise, we don't know what is going on behind the scenes as far as recoveries or arrests.

The government is moving on this now http://www.realscam.com/f9/telexfree-scam-not-2366/, as far back as May 2013 the warning signs were present. How did the promoters still manage to raise millions?

A smattering of low profile scams and arrests on the local level.

Ponzi Clawbacks | Investment Fraud Attorney | Hackard Law Firm
    Ponzitracker - Ponzitracker

Largely too little too late, by the time the scam is shut down and the perpetrators arrested the money is very likely gone. Best case, victims get back half. Even if the government doubled or tripled enforcement, would they be able to arrest the scammers and shutter scams before massive losses occur? There have to be 1000s operating at any one time.

For my money I come down on the side of educating and warning people before they send money. That is the only thing that is going to keep people whole, anything else is just closing the barn door after the horses have left. While there are still many scams run locally, more and more they take place world wide via the web. Often being run from places with governments as corrupt as the criminals

A thread like http://www.realscam.com/f8/banners-b...onzi-scam-897/ with over 1,000,000 views has given people ample opportunity to not send these folks money. I have to think people can come to any thread here and have a very good case made why they are being conned. Many do and keep their money safe.

There is also a very cynical side of me that believes people who are still sending money to these hucksters are idiots. This from another thread and my guess this guy will be first in line to cry if the government does move in and shutter any of these scams. Those of course that have not already blown up and run with his money. Certainly I want the government to protect those who are infirm and can't protect themselves, but there are a ton of punters who think they have found the real deal and are all to happy to part with their cash.

    Re: US DOJ/Scams

Least of what governments can do is to issue an Alert on a Specific "company" or Cease and Desist order.
Things like that take a one man-hour to verify that such "company" is not registered to offer any securities.
And this will cover 90% of ponzi scams. Will stop masses investing in them. That is not being done - means regulators are crippled or blind.
