    Ameriplan

People ask me about Ameriplan all the time, so I thought it would be a good one to discuss here.

    Ameriplan disclaimer:
    AmeriPlan®

I had to hunt down an old broker disclaimer to find the income disclosure:
    https://web.archive.org/web/20130216...er-broker.html

That page no longer has the income disclosure:
    AmeriPlan®

And I couldn't find an income disclosure on the site. Are MLM companies required to
    have one?

Then there's info about Ameriplan's income disclosure in this document:
    http://ftc.gov/os/comments/bizoppsta...0010-57283.pdf

    “Ameriplan
[Average annual income9 is disclosed for “Active IBO’s” – but with no indication of what percentage of the total of all IBOs signed up are still active. Ameriplan also fails to disclose that approximately 99% of all IBOs lose money after subtracting “pay-to-play” and minimum operating expenses.]”

    Re: Ameriplan

I was reading this article at Thompson Burton

MLM Income Claims: Basic guidelines for companies and distributors

    ...specifically this part...

"The FTC used the following legal argument to make its case against FHTM:

Any income claim that is considered to be deceptive needs a disclosure. The FTC considers an income claim deceptive where information that would affect a reasonable consumer’s judgment is misrepresented or omitted.[1] There is a presumption that all information regarding earning potentials affect consumer’s judgment, even when you do not guarantee they will make any money.[2] Out of those claims, it is also presumed to be reasonable for consumers to rely on statements you expressly make,[3] regardless of whether you tell them making “big money” is a sure thing or not.[4] In other words, all income claims that are atypical need adequate disclosures."
Which sounds like that if no income claims are made - then no disclosures are needed.

I looked at the Ameriplan IBO Policies and Procedures Manual here:
    https://www.ameriplanusa.com/IBOPoli...ures082213.pdf

And on page 21 it says:
    "No Income Representations

Actual or potential income representations or claims regarding the AmeriPlan® program are strictly prohibited."
Approved IBO ads are here (although I'm not sure how current this is):
    https://www.ameriplanusa.com/IBO/pdf/ApprovedAds.pdf

Most of those ads are generic when it comes to income, but one says:

    "A Great Company
    Make $1,000 the first
    three weeks.
Six figures in the first two -
    four years. Ask me how.
    FT/PT"

This video published on the StableWorkAtHome.com YouTube channel

at 2:02 a woman says she's made $100,000/year for many, many years with Ameriplan.

at 2:34 a message pops up saying "Best Work At Home For Parents" CNN. I tried to see if I could
find where that quotation is from, but I couldn't find it - and I don't see it being used on the AmeriplanUSA
    website. Here's the Press Section:
In the Press AmeriPlan® USA - Medical Discount Plans - Healthcare Benefits

    Re: Ameriplan

This page does provide links to the places it claims mention or endorse Ameriplan.

Here are a few of them:
Maternity Insurance for Pregnant Women | APA

    Which states:
"One example of a discount service is AmeriPlan–a discount plan that is currently available in every state except Alaska. AmeriPlan can reduce the cost of health care services up to 50% and even more in some cases. Their benefits include physician, hospital, and ancillary services (i.e., lab work, tests, x-rays). Since AmeriPlan is not an insurance plan, all pre-existing conditions are covered (except orthodontic treatment in progress). And there are no deductibles, no waiting periods, no claim forms, and no annual limits. For more information you can go to AmeriPlanUSA or call them toll-free at (800) 647-8421."
"Morley Safer from 60 Minutes did a huge special on Ameriplan. He was asked to host a special episode of the American Medical Review where Ameriplan was the featured story"

"Parent Magazine stated in one of their issues in an article about the top 25 ways to save money on health care, that a discount health plan, like AMERIPLAN is the number 3 top way to save"

How Much Does Credibility Cost? - Page 1 - News - Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach - New Times Broward-Palm Beach

    How Much Does Credibility Cost?
Boca Raton video producer Mark Kielar signed Cronkite, Brown, and Safer to host thinly veiled advertisements -- until the deal fell apart

    ................................
But last month, the deal started to unravel. On May 7, the New York Times reported that the American Medical Review series appeared to be thinly veiled ads for corporate sponsors. According to the Times, the sponsors of the videos, often pharmaceutical companies, have broad discretion in editing the tapes, providing the raw information, and having final-cut rights before broadcast. In effect, the pharmaceutical companies were paying for the credibility of major news figures, in at least one case shelling out a six-figure fee to Safer for a single appearance, the New York Times said.

Yeh, I'm suspecting some of that is going on as it goes on ALL of the time. There is a way to get those files from stations to find undisclosed financial affiliations - which I'm sure number in the thousands if not hundreds of thousands.
