Tupperware - the difference between direct selling and network marketing
In 2013, Tupperware left the Direct Selling Association.
In the words of its' CEO: "We didn't leave direct selling," Tupperware chief executive officer Rick Goings told The Wall Street Journal last year. "Direct selling left us, because the industry became dominated by buying clubs and what looked like pyramid schemes."
Tupperware subsequently released a white paper entitled: DIFFERENTIATING TRADITIONAL DIRECT SELLERS FROM NETWORK MARKETERS. reproduced here:
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

Re: Tupperware - the difference between direct selling and network marketing
most interesting, but strikes me as disingenuous, since tupperware, mary kay, pampered chef et al have been found to be mlms on the website www.mlm-thetruth. com
and tupperware has multiple subsidiaries that are mlm's as well

Re: Tupperware - the difference between direct selling and network marketing
I thought FOR ONCE I might applaud TW for the content in this white paper UNTIL I got to the part where they named MARY KAY as a traditional direct seller LIKE THEM.
Mary Kay is one of the worst offenders as well as exploiter of women. Tupperware has lost ALL credibility they might have had by attempting to distance themselves from MLM/NWM and it's group of scammers. See here for an inside look at the disgusting MK business: Pink Truth
It will make you see "red"!!!!

Re: Tupperware - the difference between direct selling and network marketing
bravo Char! I so agree. Note also that this white paper is directed to the shareholders, perhaps this was done around the same time as Bill Akmon (sp?) and his hedge fund took on Herbalife? Maybe this was Tupperware's lame attempt to `get out in front of the issue' and declare themselves different? Well it didn't work! As a matter of fact, it might just backfire on them if it really gets out there to the public!
So notice also they still DONT clarify how they sell their product, distribute it etc. Just because they SAY they are different proves nothing! I would LOVE to see a forensic accountant tear into their books and show the `proof' they TW is different. Won't happen! I would love to see a bona fide stock analyst/hedge fund take em on, but I doubt that will happen either since I believe Bill Ackman lost his `bet' when he shorted the stock of Herbalife and it went up (at least that's what I recall happened...let me know if I am wrong on that)
so I doubt we'll see another Hedgefund/public battle royal happen again either
Frustrates me how these dang companies keep getting away with flat out lies! Yet we would go to jail if we tried such tactics!

Looks like it closed the day at $44.26, down some 20%
It seems like in this "industry" common sense is not all that common!

Re: Tupperware - the difference between direct selling and network marketing
oh thank you for letting me know I'm wrong! Seriously! i'm not being sarcastic here! I have been cheering ackman on and booing the other guy who went long against ackman (blank as to his name at the moment-sorry)
If the short can work out it will serve to shine a very public spotlight on the whole issue of mlm's-at least thats what i am hoping....

I believe the expression used to describe the situation is: "Herbalife is getting smoked" as this graph of the last seven days of trading shows:

Re: Tupperware - the difference between direct selling and network marketing
now that's an ugly chart - if you're long that is! I really am glad the short is working out because it will help prove Ackman right! good thanks for sharing that!
Now if we could only take on these other liars and scammers, such as Tupperware, one of the `just fly under the radar MLM's'
It IS infuriating to me how Tupperware can turnaround and do a bald faced lie about how they are different, better etc and thus pulling out of the DSA, and get away with it. And to include Mary Kay in that list, really?
What do you think the very first argument my relative used on me when trying to recruit me the first time? Well, BC (a subsidiary of Tupperware) is a member of the DSA and thus not an MLM! Seriously! That was the very FIRST argument this individual used!
That is why I have decided to get on some of these discussion boards, because the lies told and the consequent inconsistencies can make one feel like they are the crazy one. Sort of like, `no that can't be true. They didn't really say that, right? Surely they know that doesn't even make sense, right?' Wherein a mere 15 minutes of research will prove the falsehood!
But YOU are the bad one for `not supporting their `opportunity/dream'
Thanks for giving the FACTS
