Students taking piles of ensembles and other classes they don't need pay a heavy price. Music students need to be practicing their principal instrument for 3-4 hours every weekday and practicing piano to achieve proficiency for at least an hour every weekday day. Mastering the technical exercises and literature for principal instruments is paramount and can't be done if students are wasting time on classes that are not transferable. DCCCD / Richland is supposed to be mirroring what these students would do as Freshman and Sophomores at real schools of music. Richland music students are not always held to the standards of university students and the attendance in music classes is very poor. Students also fail necessary core and music classes because they are in so many ensembles, lessons and other music classes that are not transferable and that the advisors should not be placing them in that they are totally overwhelmed and exhausted. Every credit hour should be counted and planned for the students benefit and not to fill chairs for Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan. Richland adjuncts, who are the best available and often teach at other real music schools assure me that many students that transfer need 3 years at the university to finish a music degree. That means many credit hours charged at out of state tuition and some having to finish without any financial aid left available. Richland music advisors are defrauding federal financial aid with their dirty chair filling and putting these students in financial disaster!
